ASFB ABORIGINAL AND TORRE STRAIT ISLANDER
TRAVEL BURSARY DARWIN 2025

The Australian Society for Fish Biology acknowledges the deep connection between Indigenous peoples and Country's waters, and the invaluable Traditional Ecological Knowledge that strengthens fisheries management and conservation.

The Australian Society for Fish Biology (www.asfb.org.au) is offering up to 10 travel bursaries for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to attend our annual conference in Garramilla Darwin 18-21 August, on the lands of the Larrakia people.

Our Darwin conference theme is 'Connecting Waters: Science, Policy and People for a stronger fish future.' We're bringing together different knowledge systems and perspectives to address challenges facing fish and aquatic environments. You'll hear from inspiring speakers, join workshops, and participate in discussions. More details on the conference program can be found here.

What we provide:

  • Free conference registration (worth $765)

  • Up to $1,000 for travel and accommodation

  • One-year ASFB membership

We recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may travel with family or community members as part of cultural practice. We're happy to provide additional funding for one accompanying person who shares your interest in fish and waterways.

Who can apply:

·       Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working in aquatic management, the fishing industry, or Indigenous Protected Area management of River, Land and Sea Country

·       Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people with a deep connection to fish and the waters that support them

A separate opportunity exists for complementary conference registration and travel support for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. Please contact John Morrongiello (asfb.president@gmail.com) for details.

Application closes: Sunday 29 June 2025. Notification of outcomes: Friday 11 July 2025
·       Applications will be assessed by a committee appointed by the ASFB President
·       If a successful applicant is unable to attend, they are asked to notify the ASFB President as soon as practicable so the bursary can be offered to the next eligible person.

Apply via email to the ASFB President, John Morrongiello (asfb.president@gmail.com). Please email John if you require assistance or have questions.

Applicants are encouraged to consider presenting on their work or experience. Please note this is not essential nor part of the travel bursary application process. Email John if you would like to discuss opportunities.
